A Game to Remember Celebrating Laurel Circle’s Neil Friedman as the New York Mets Veteran of the Game
Recently, one of our own had the opportunity to be celebrated on a grand stage: Air Force veteran, retired nurse, and lifelong New York Mets fan Staff Sergeant Neil Friedman was honored as the Mets Veteran of the Game during a special ceremony at Citi Field.
Neil Friedman’s Military Service and Career Achievements
Neil’s story is defined by a lifelong dedication to helping others:
- S. Air Force Service: Served as a Staff Sergeant from 1967 to 1971.
- Vietnam War Deployment: Stationed in South Vietnam, where he played a pivotal role in military medical advancements by helping establish and operate the region’s very first neurodiagnostic lab.
- Military Honors: Awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.
- 30-Year Nursing Career: Used the GI Bill to earn his Registered Nurse credentials following his discharge, spending over three decades specializing in sleep medicine.
The Citi Field Veteran of the Game Ceremony
During a mid-inning tribute presented in partnership with Clover, Neil was featured on the Citi Field videoboard as thousands of fans gave him a standing ovation. To commemorate his service, New York Mets pitcher Robert Stock presented Neil with a framed American flag flown directly over the stadium, a moment Neil shared on the field alongside his two daughters and three grandchildren.
“As a lifelong Mets fan, this was a truly surreal experience and easily the best seats I’ve ever had,” Neil shared. “The VIP treatment was something I’ll never forget, especially being able to share it with my two daughters and three grandchildren, who were able to join me on the field. While I’m deeply grateful for this honor, I know there are many veterans who are equally, if not more, deserving of this recognition.” – Neil Friedman
A Home Run in Retirement
Since moving to Laurel Circle in August 2024, Neil has brought that same passion to campus life. He is an active participant in the community’s Voice Actors Guild, leads creative writing projects, and shares his work through his personal YouTube channel.
“Neil came to Laurel Circle in August of 2024 and instantly became an active Member of our Voice Actors Guild and creative writing group,” said Rachel Block, Social Director at Laurel Circle. “He’s a proud nurse, veteran, and grandpa. He’s just a great guy.”
